JA, Foundation Launch Money Website for Kids
GIRARD, Ohio -- In a partnership, Junior Achievement and the T. Rowe Price Foundation have developed a co-branded website to provide financial educational content to parents, educators and students, Michele Merkel, president of JA of Mahoning Valley Inc., announced Monday.
The website provides direct access to The Great Piggy Bank Adventure, an online game and mobile app JA created in collaboration with T. Rowe Price and Walt Disney Imagineering.
According to T. Rowe Price’s 2013 Parents, Kids & Money Survey, 73% of parents say they regularly discuss money with their children kids. Only 34% of the children polled agree. In an effort to make these conversations easier and more frequent, the portal provides resources for parents and educators to teach kids how to invest in their futures through blog posts, quizzes and interactive activities.
Three-quarters of the children say an online game or mobile app would be helpful to learn about saving and spending. Students as young as 8 years old can start to learn on their own by browsing interactive activities including crossword puzzles and word searches and playing games such as The Great Piggy Bank Adventure.
“This web portal will be a great resource for our local educators as well as parents to talk to students about saving and spending at an early age,” Merkel said in a prepared statement.
Piggy Bank players are challenged to set goals, save and spend wisely as they work to stay ahead of inflation and diversify their assets.
Today’s children likely will need to save more than $1 million for their retirements, says T. Rowe Price, an investment bank. Its survey shows that only 21% believe they will achieve that sum by investing in stocks and bonds while 24% believe they could more easily achieve it by becoming famous. “Helping kids learn fundamental concepts, like setting goals, saving, inflation, and asset allocation, is the focal point of the partnership with Junior Achievement,” said Ann Allston Boyce, president of the T. Rowe Price Foundation.
