Eastern Gateway Support Program Earns Top Marks
STEUBENVILLE, Ohio -- The TRiO Student Support Services program at Eastern Gateway Community College has received perfect scores for the 2011-2012 reporting year, the community college announced Monday. The program serves 160 eligible students at the Jefferson County campus here and the Valley Center in Youngstown.
The goal of the program is to increase the retention and graduation rates of its participants and make easier the students’ transition from one level of higher education to the next. Funded by a U.S. Department of Education grant, the program provides opportunities for academic development, helps students with basic college requirements, and seeks to motivate students toward the successful completion of their postsecondary education.
The U.S. Department of Education awarded experience points based on serving the approved number of students and meeting or exceeding the objectivesof the project.
From enrollment to graduation, TRiO students can receive support in academic advising, individual academic plan for success, monitoring of academic progress, academic success workshops/seminars, computer literacy instruction, academic intervention, tutoring, major academic planning, transfer information and help, including college visits, said Dorothy Collins, director of TRiO programs and academic advising. Other topics are financial aid and scholarship application help, budget management skills, mentoring, leadership opportunities, career exploration and balancing life roles.
