Davis Y Preschool Gets Grant, Quality Approval
BOARDMAN, Ohio -- The Davis Family YMCA preschool program has received a $40,000 grant from the United Way of Youngstown and the Mahoning Valley that will allow it to offer scholarships to low-income families and individuals in need. In addition, the preschool has been approved as a one-star Step Up To Quality center.
Since September 2005, the Davis Family YMCA preschool program has provided youth with an opportunity to engage in exercise and learn as it prepared them socially and emotionally for kindergarten, said Adele Taylor, preschool and family director for the Davis Y.
Nearly 600 preschoolers ages 3 through 6 have left the school after meeting or exceeding their early learning content standards.
Step Up To Quality is a rating system for early childhood care and education programs based on measures such as fewer children per classroom, better trained teachers, a more comprehensive early education curriculum, and a focus on continuous improvement.
“Becoming a Step Up To Quality approved center was a goal our staff has been dedicated and excited to achieve,” Taylor noted, adding that the United Way two-year grant means the center can provide services to many more children.
