‘Metamorphosis’ Mural Depicts the City's Changes
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Drive or walk along Federal Street downtown and you’ll see a big change – the “Metamorphosis Project,” a 310-foot mural installed over the Memorial Day weekend on the three buildings that comprise the Youngstown Business Incubator.
The block-long mural’s “Metamorphosis” theme blends the urban skyline of Youngstown with steel, technology and nature to show the growth and change of the city. It is visible from the outside of the YBI buildings but does not block the street views of those working inside the buildings.
The mural was designed and installed by six graphic arts students at Youngstown State University under the supervision of former YSU professor Charmaine Banach, now a professor at Quinnipiac University in Hamden, Conn.
“Congratulations to my students who spent the last several days installing the mural, and also working on the design and printing process for the last year,” says Banach on a posting at the project’s Kickstarter.com web page.
The project was underwritten by 122 backers who last year collectively pledged $7,450 through a Kickstarter campaign.
Kickstarter.com is a website that enables creative projects – “everything from films, games and music to art, design and technology” – to secure direct financial support from the public. Kickstarter was launched in 2009 and since that time, “more than 4.1 million people have pledged over 4630 million, funding more than 42,000 creative projects,” according to its website.
