Youngstown Unemployment Rate Shows Steep Decline
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Youngstown’s unemployment rate in March was down nearly two full percentage points from a year earlier, the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services reported today.
The unemployment rate in Youngstown last month was 8.3%, down from 10.2% in March 2013 and nearly a full point from February’s 9.1% rate. Warren’s March unemployment rate was 7.6%, down more than a point from 8.8% in March 2013 and from 8.2% in February.
Both Mahoning and Trumbull counties last month saw nearly identical percentage drops in unemployment rates over the year. In Mahoning County, the March unemployment rate was 7.0% and Trumbull’s 7.1%, both down from 8.5% in March 2013. In February, both counties also posted unemployment rates of 7.9%. In Columbiana County, the unemployment rate in March was 6.6%, down from 8.4% a year earlier and from 7.9% in February.
The Youngstown-Warren metropolitan statistical area, which encompasses Mahoning and Trumbull counties in Ohio and Mercer County in Pennsylvania, posted a March unemployment rate of 6.9%, down from 8.5% a year earlier and from 7.7% in February. The unemployment rate for the Ohio-only portion of the metro was 7.0%, also down from 8.5% a year earlier and down from 7.9% in February.
