Youngstown Unemployment Rate Drops 3 Points in Year
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- The unemployment rate for in August for Youngstown fell nearly three percentage points from a year ago, the latest state data show.
Last month, the unemployment rate was 7.7%, down from 10.5% in August 2013 as well as from 9.0% in July, according to data the Ohio Department of Job and Family Service released this morning.
The rate in Warren also showed a significant year-over-year drop to 6.8%, down from 8.9%, as well as from 8.3% in July.
Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties all experienced decreases of about two percentage points year-over-year. In Mahoning County, the rate was 5.9%, down 2.1 percentage points from 8.0% and from 6.7% in July. In Columbiana County, the rate declined two full points year-over-year, from 7.8% in August 2013 to 5.8%, and down from 6.5% in July. In Trumbull County the rate was 6.0% in August, down from 7.9% a year earlier and 7.0% in July.
The three-county region that comprises most of the Youngstown-Warren metropolitan statistical area (Mercer County, Pa., is the other component) reported 6.0% unemployment rates for August, down from 8.0% a year earlier. In July, the entire MSA , posted a 6.7%, while the Ohio segment was slightly higher, 6.8%.
