Valley Unemployment Rates Rise from December
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Area unemployment rates rose in January from the month before, though they were down from rates in January 2013.
Columbiana County experienced the greatest changes in its unemployment rate. Its unemployment rate was 8.4% in January, up nearly one and a half percentage points from 7% in December but down nearly two full points from January 2013’s 10.2%. Trumbull County’s unemployment rate was 8.4% in January, up from 7.5% in December but down from 10.1% in January 2013. Mahoning County’s unemployment rate was 8.6% in January, up just a point from 7.6% in December but down from 9.8% in January 2013.
Youngstown’s unemployment rate rose a point to 10.1% from 9.1% the month prior but was down from 11.7% in January 2013. Warren reported an unemployment rate of 8.9% in January, up from 8.3% in December but down from 10.5% a year earlier.
For the Youngstown-Warren metropolitan area, which covers Mahoning and Trumbull counties in Ohio and Mercer County in Pennsylvania, the January unemployment rate was 8.2%, up from 7.3% the prior month but down nearly two full percentage points from 10.1% in January 2013. For the Ohio-only portion of the metro, the unemployment rate was 8.5%, compared with December’s 7.5% and January 2013’s 9.9%.
