Trade Adjustment Help Approved for GE Workers
WASHINGTON – Trade adjustment assistance is now available for 36 workers laid off from the General Electric Ohio Lamp in Warren, Ohio. The petition was filed in August by the IUE/CWA on behalf of the laid-off employees. The assistance will help separated workers in their search for re-employment in a number of ways, including up to two years of retraining.
“The Trade Adjustment Assistance offered to those workers at GE Lighting who lost their jobs will speed up the process of getting them back in the workforce,” said U.S. Rep. Tim Ryan, D-17 Ohio. “I hope that these workers can still find their future here in the Valley -- find employment here and raise their children here. My office will continue to work with the IUE/CWA to ensure that needed resources for these workers are provided.”
In October, U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio, wrote to Labor Secretary Hilda Solis requesting the approval of the TAA petition application filed on behalf of workers at the Warren plant. Brown urged the Department of Labor to act swiftly to ensure financial support for these workers and their families.
“The loss of a job can be a devastating experience,” Brown said. “Ohioans who work hard and play by the rules should not be left to struggle when they lose their job through no fault of their own. These resources will help ensure that displaced workers from Warren have the financial support and training opportunities to get a fresh start.”
