Staff Right Pleased by Turnout at Job Fair
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- After an upswing in manufacturing jobs following a slow winter and spring, Staff Right was looking to fill 40 open positions Tuesday at its fourth recent job fair, this one in Austintown.
Derrick Hart, general manager for Staff Right, Boardman, said many of the positions his company looks to fill are temp-to-hire.
“We have some openings at the steel mills through some of the subcontractors that we're partnered with, anywhere from entry-level general labor to millwrights and maintenance positions,” Hart said, adding that the demand for jobs can fluctuate every day.
At the fair, Staff Right had jobseekers fill out applications, which will be separated and sent to its offices in Boardman, Columbiana and Warren. Applicants who satisfy the criteria will be contacted later this week for follow-up interviews.
Most of the jobs Staff Right is looking to fill will last “anywhere from two weeks to a few months,” he said.
“A majority of our positions are an opportunity for people to get their foot in the door and it allows them to work into a position with our clients,” he said.
Hart was encouraged by the yesterday’s turnout after the response at similar events at Ohio Means Jobs in Trumbull, Mahoning and Columbiana counties was lower than expected.
“We actually had people waiting for us [today], which is a great change,” he reported. “We've done job fairs at the [Ohio Means Jobs] offices in all three counties. Unfortunately, we didn't have the response we were looking for. … But today, because of the new location being central to the three counties, we've had a tremendous response so far.”
About 15 minutes after the job fair began, Staff Right was close to its goal of 40 job seekers attending.
Among the first to finish his application was Scott Champion from Austintown, who was looking for industrial labor and janitorial jobs.
“Some temp services have helped me out in the past, so I figured I might as well come out and try again,” he said. “I know if they have job, they'll call me. And if they don't, then I'll call them and just go from there and hopefully start working soon.”
