Region's Unemployment Rates Ease Slightly in May
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Area unemployment rates varied slightly in May, dropping by at least a tenth of a percentage point in Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties although rising by a tenth of a point in the region’s largest city, the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services reports
From a 6.0% rate in April for all three counties, unemployment fell to 5.9% in Columbiana and Trumbull counties and by two tenths of a point in Mahoning County to 5.8%, according to the state data, which was released this morning. In May 2013, both Mahoning and Trumbull counties posted 7.8% unemployment rates and Columbiana County posted a 7.6% rate that month.
In Youngstown, unemployment rose by a tenth of a point over the month to 7.4%, but down from May 2013’s 9.8%. Warren’s unemployment rate in May was unchanged from the prior month, 6.6%, but down from 8.3% a year earlier.
For the metropolitan statistical area, which covers Mahoning and Trumbull counties in Ohio and Mercer County in Pennsylvania, the unemployment rate in May was 5.8%, unchanged from April but down two percentage points from 7.8% in May 2013.
For the Ohio-only portion of the MSA, the unemployment rate in May was 5.9%, down from 6.0% in April and from May 2013’s 7.8%.
