Penn National Presents New Design Plan to Commission
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- The Ohio State Racing Commission is expected to vote next week on a revised design plan Penn National Gaming Inc. is proposing for its racino in Austintown, a Penn National official says.
Penn National its revised plan this morning at the commission's meeting in Columbus. The plan calls for opening the racino with 513 seats that are enclosed with table service, with a potential 488 enclosed seats to be added based on market demand, said Eric Schippers, senior vice president for public affairs for the Wyomissing, Pa.-based gaming company. A potential third phase, which would involve expanding the building footprint, would add another 400 seats.
Site work began last year on the proposed $125 million Hollywood Slots at Mahoning Valley Race Course but was halted a few weeks ago when the racing commission, concerned about seating and stabling/stall issues, balked at approving the transfer of the thoroughbred license from Penn National's Beulah Park track to Austintown.
The company had planned to let contracts worth $4 million for structural steel and other site work about a month ago had the commission approved the license transfer. If the commission approves the revised plan, Penn National would immediately reactivate work at the site, Schippers said.
