Outlook for Restaurant Job Growth Best in 2 Years
WASHINGTON -- The restaurant industry continued to register robust job growth in May as the economy surpassed its pre-recession employment peak, the National Restaurant Association says. Restaurant operators' outlook for hiring staff rose to its highest level in two years.
Bruce Grindy, chief economist at the association, says these trends are welcome news.
"The economy continued to move in a positive direction in May, according to the latest employment report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics," he said in a prepared statement. "Restaurant employment gains remained robust in May with the industry adding a net 31,700 jobs on a seasonally adjusted basis. This marked the 51st consecutive monthly gain for more than 1.3 million jobs.”
In the tracking survey the association conducts, in May 25% of restaurant operators said they expect to employ more people by the end of six months than they did a year ago while only 10% plan to reduce staff within a half-year.
