Ohio Records Increase in New Business Filings
COLUMBUS, Ohio -- A total of 8,970 entities filed to do business in the Buckeye State in April, the office of Ohio secretary of state reported Thursday. This marks an increase over April 2013, when 8,539 filings were recorded.
From January through April, 33,774 filings were recorded -- a slight increase from the same period last year when there were 32,504 filings.
During 2012 and 2013, the state saw a record-setting number of new businesses file with 88,068 and 89,735 companies filing, respectively. Growth in online business filings has been steady and available online services continue to be expanded, the secretary’s office noted. Since the launch of the program last October, 9,569 companies have filed online.
New business filings are classified as forms filed with the Ohio secretary of state on which owners or their agents declare the formation of a business entity -- for-profits, nonprofits and professional corporations, limited liability companies, partnerships, limited partnerships and limited liability partnerships. Filing as a business in Ohio does not guarantee the company will begin operations, be profitable or create jobs, the office noted.
