Ohio 48th in Growth of Female-Owned Businesses
WASHINGTON -- Ohio has an estimated 259,600 female-owned firms that employ 289,300. This number has grown by 26.6% since 1997 and ranks the Buckeye State 48th in growth in the number of such firms over the 16-year period.
The businesses account for an estimated $443.5 billion in sales, a 42.1% growth rate and put the state 44th in growth of firm revenue between 1997 and 2013, according to the third annual State of Women-Owned Businesses Report commissioned by American Express OPEN. The report analyzed data from the U.S. Census Bureau Survey of Business Owners in 1997, 2002 and 2007.
Female-owned firms in Ohio employ an estimated 289,300 this year, down 0.7% from 1997, the report found. Similar to previous annual reports released this time last year, the analysis, based on reports from industry, revenue and employment size at the national and state levels, shares a new and nuanced investigation into the growth trends among the 8.6 million female-owned enterprises over the past 15 years.
Nationally, the estimated total of 8,617,200 firms owned by woman is up 59.1% from 1997; employment has grown to more than 7.75 million and sales are at nearly $1.32 trillion, growing by 63.1%.
