New Business Filings Down in May from Year Ago
COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Business filings in Ohio last month were down from a year earlier, although flings year-to-date remain ahead of 2013, Secretary of State Jon Husted reported Monday.
In May, 7,820 new entities filed to do business in the state, down from 8,229 in May 2013. For the first five months of the year, the Husted’s office has assisted with 41,594 new business filings, a slight increase from the 40,733 new business filings for the January-May period in 2013.
During 2012 and 2013, 88,068 and 89,735 new companies, respectively, filed to do business in the state. Since online filing was launched in October 2013 in Ohio, 9,569 new companies have taken advantage of the service to file online to do business in the state.
New business filings are classified as forms filed with the Ohio Secretary of State that declare the formation of a business entity, including for-profit, non-profit and professional corporations, limited liability companies, partnerships, limited partnerships and limited liability partnerships.
Earlier this year, the office announced that it expanded services to permit businesses to create a limited partnership and file for reinstatement, steps that previously had to be done with paper forms and through the mail.
