Matalco Makes Plans Official for Lordstown Plant
BRAMPTON, Ont. – Matalco Inc. this afternoon officially confirmed that it is constructing a 200,000-square-foot manufacturing plant in Lordstown, Ohio.
On Monday the company had emailed invitations to a Sept. 17 ground breaking, the first indication that it had decided to move forward on the project (READ STORY). Shortly after noon today, the Youngstown/Warren Regional Chamber sent media organizations a news release with shared letterhead formally announcing the project.
Matalco, a member of the Giampaolo Group, will spend more than $100 million to construct and equip the plant, which will be located on a greenfield site in the Ohio Commerce Park. At full capacity, the plant will employ 60 to 80 permanent, full-time personnel with annual production of 350 million pounds of various series, high-quality aluminum billet. The plant is expected to be commissioned by early 2016, the company said.
“This significant investment clearly demonstrates our unwavering commitment to serve our customers and expand our market share,” said Armand Sanguigni, Matalco president. “Overall, we are excited to be part of this progressive community as this will bring new jobs and opportunities to the region.”
The Lordstown location, which had been in contention for the project with several out-of-state sites, was chosen for its location relative to Matalco’s market, “exceptional workforce” and a comprehensive incentive package and assistance provided at state and local levels, Sanguigni said.
On Dec. 2 the Ohio Job Creation Tax Credit Authority approved an eight-year, 50% job creation tax credit with a value of $450,000. The company also has secured a 75%, 10-year property tax abatement from the village of Lordstown, an economic development grant from the private JobsOhio agency -- specific amount unknown -- and workforce services and on-the-job training assistance from the Trumbull County Ohio Means Jobs office.
“The Matalco announcement has been a long time coming as the chamber has been working with Matalco for more than a year and a half,” said Sarah Boyarko, vice president for economic development, North America, for the chamber. “Securing this investment for the village of Lordstown involved several economic development partners, including state and local officials. This is a big win for Trumbull County and further evidence that the Mahoning Valley’s economy is strengthening.”
The chamber worked with real estate group CBRE to identify a site for Matalco and provided "a signifcant amount" of support for the project, Boyarko said. That assistance included local and regional supply chain details, wage and workforce infomration, and coordinationof economic development assistance from the village and the state of Ohio. The chamber also confirmed assitance for workforce services and training funds through OhioMeansJobs-Trumbull County.
