Mahoning Valley Unemployment Rates Rise in June
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Local unemployment rates in June rose by half a percentage point or more compared to May, although declinen from jobless rates a year earlier, the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services reported Tuesday.
Warren saw its unemployment rate rise to 7.3% in June, up from 6.6% in May but down from 9.4% in June 2013. Youngstown’s June unemployment rate rose to 8.1% in June, up from 7.5% the month before, an improvement from 11.0% in June 2013.
Trumbull County’s unemployment rate last month was 6.5%, up from 5.9% in May but down from 8.4% a year earlier. Mahoning and Columbiana counties’ unemployment rates each clocked in at 6.2% in June, both up from the prior month’s 5.8%. Mahoning’s June 2013 rate was 8.6%, while Columbiana’s was 8.3%.
For the metropolitan statistical area that covers Mahoning and Trumbull counties in Ohio and Mercer County in Pennsylvania, the June unemployment rate 6.3%, up half a percentage point from May’s 5.8% but down from June 2013’s 8.6%.
The Ohio-only portion of the metro also reported a 6.3% rate for June, up from May’s 5.9% but down from 8.5% in June 2013.
