Mahoning River Group Gains Park Service Support
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- A planning official from the National Park Service will work with the Friends of the Mahoning River over the next year to help the organization develop management strategies, new partnerships and provide project assistance, the group announced.
Andrea Irland, outdoor recreational planner for the National Park Service U.S. Dept. of the Interior, has signed on to a one-year commitment to help Friends of the Mahoning River step up its awareness, education and outreach efforts.
Irland, part of the Rivers, Trails, & Conservation Assistance Program for the Midwest Region, has helped with successful initiatives such as the Cuyahoga River Water Trail project.
"I am so impressed with what the Friends of the Mahoning River have already been able to achieve and the amount of enthusiasm there is to improve, promote and protect the Mahoning River," Irland said.
Friends of the Mahoning River was the main sponsor behind Riverfest, a day-long celebration of the river held in Youngstown this past summer. The organization promotes both the river's beauty, ecology and its importance as a recreational hub for fishing, kayaking, canoeing and hiking.
