July Unemployment Up in Youngstown, Warren
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Unemployment in each of the Mahoning Valley’s two largest cities rose by nearly a full percentage point in July from the month before, the latest data from the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services shows.
County and metropolitan area data for the region released this morning by the state agency also showed unemployment rates last month were up from June, although the unemployment rate was down from July 2013 for the local cities, counties and metros.
Unemployment in Youngstown was 9.0% during July, up from 9.1% in June although down from 10.4% in July 2013.
Warren’s unemployment rate showed a similar increase, rising from 7.3% in June to 8.2% last month, although declining from 10.4% in July 2013.
Mahoning County’s unemployment rate was 6.8% in July, up from 6.2% in June but down from 8.9% in July 2013.
Trumbull County’s 7.0% unemployment rate last month was up half a percentage point from June’s 6.5% but better than July 2013’s rate for the county, which was also 8.9%.
Columbiana County’s unemployment rate also rose over the month, but the ascent was less steep. The county’s July unemployment rate of 6.5% was up from 6.2% in June and down from 8.3% in July 2013.
In the three-county metropolitan statistical area that covers Mahoning and Trumbull counties in Ohio and Mercer County, Pa., July's unemployment rate was 6.7%, up from 6.3% in June but down from July 2013’s 7.7%.
The Ohio-only portion of the MSA posted an unemployment rate of 6.9% in July, up more than half a percentage point from June’s 6.3% but down two full points from July 2013’s 8.9%.
