Jobless Rates Drop but Still Above Year-Ago Figures
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Local unemployment rates declined in October from the month before but in Columbiana and Mahoning counties they were above where they stood a year earlier.
The October unemployment rate in Trumbull County was 7.6%, down from 7.9% in September as well as from the same level in October 2012. In Mahoning County, the unemployment rate declined modestly, from 8.0% in September to 7.9% last month, but was up from 6.7% a year earlier. In Columbiana County, the rate was 7.6% rate in October, an improvement from its rate in September, 8.0%, but was up half a percent from 7.1% in October 2012.
The unemployment rate for the three-county metropolitan area that encompasses Mahoning and Trumbull counties in Ohio and Mercer County, Pa., was 7.7% in October, up from 7.5% a year earlier but down from 7.9% in September. The October rate for the two counties in Ohio was 7.8%, up from 7.3% a year earlier but down from 7.9% in September.
Youngstown posted a 9.8% unemployment rate in October, down from 10.2% in September but up from 8.7% in October 2012. The rate in Warren was 8.2%, an improvement from both 8.7% in September and 9.2% in October 2012.
