Hiring Outlook Glum for IT Workers in Cleveland
CLEVELAND -- Only 12% of Cleveland-area chief information officers plan to expand their Information technology teams in the first half of next year. Another 66% plan to hire only for open IT roles, 20% plan to put hiring plans on hold, and none expects to reduce staff, a Robert Half Technology survey finds.
"Windows migrations and website refreshes are just a few of the types of projects that are driving IT hiring in Cleveland," said Terry Phillips, Cleveland metro market manager of Robert Half Technology, which just released the IT Hiring Forecase and Local Trend Report. "While highly technical skills such as ASP.NET, C# and SCCM packaging remain critical, employers are also focused on professionals who have strong soft skills, including the ability to communicate with the end user."
In terms of recruiting, 68% of Cleveland CIOs said it's somewhat or very challenging to find skilled IT professionals. It is most challenging to find skilled talent in the functional areas of networking (18%), security (15%) and help desk/technical support (14%).
The survey results suggest that Cleveland CIOs are optimistic about their companies' growth and IT investments; 88% reported being somewhat or very confident in their companies' prospects for growth in the first six months of 2014. This compares to 87% in the last half of 2013. Fully 69% also said they are confident that their firms will invest in IT projects in the first half. This compares to 56% in the last six months of this year.
Both network administration and database management are among the skill sets in greatest demand within their IT departments, said 53% of respondents. Desktop support followed with 52%.
