Grant Boosts Lawrence County Brownfield Effort
NEW CASTLE, Pa. – A U.S. Environmental Protection Agency grant will help the Lawrence County Economic Development Corp. work with owners of brownfield sites and assist them with paying for environmental assessments.
“This county has made steady progress over the past 20 years in bringing brownfield sites back to productive use,” said Linda Nitch, executive director of the development corporation. “We want property owners to know they have options. LCEDC is not a regulatory body. It is in our best interest to help property owners to free up these sites, to use them or to sell them to an entity that will use the site productively.”
Most of Lawrence County's brownfields are former manufacturing sites. Owners are often reluctant to have their properties assessed because of the initial cost, and the potential for additional costs if the assessment reveals contamination, Nitch noted.
LCEDC has teamed with two consulting firms, AMEC and R.A.R. Engineering Group Inc., to assist property owners who might be interested in having their property assessed. “AMEC and R.A.R. are experienced in walking owners through the process and beyond the environmental assessment. We want any owner who participates to have a professional alongside them who thoroughly understands the process and the options,” Nitch said.
