German Urban Design Students to Offer Ideas
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Urban planning students from Technical University of Dortmund (TUD), Germany, will present their ideas on the regeneration of Youngstown’s formerly industrial riverfront and neighborhoods as part of an invitation-only workshop Thursday.
Hosted by Youngstown Neighborhood Development Corp., German Marshall Fund and TUD, the workshop, “Policies and Strategies in Shrinking Cities: The Case of Youngstown, Ohio,” will include a site visit, expert panel discussion, and presentation of redevelopment ideas from the students following a panel discussion at 2 p.m. The panel discussion will feature Alan Mallach, Brookings Institution; Lavea Brachman, Greater Ohio Policy Center; Tamar Shapiro, Center for Community Progress; Thorsten Wiechmann, TUD professor; and Ian Beniston, YNDC
“We are thrilled to host the German students and professors, along with some of our most prominent national and international partners. This talented group of experts will help us continue to build our institutional knowledge and thought leadership, by providing data, case studies and practical solutions to our important challenges,” said Presley L. Gillespie, YNDC executive director.
The students and their professors have been in Youngstown for the past 10 days meeting with stakeholders throughout the city and conducting fieldwork. Best practice examples from the Ruhr Valley in Germany will be highlighted.
“Youngstown raised our interest since we learned about the Youngstown 2010 plan and we are excited to be here and to work with experts and residents in Youngstown. Our aim is to facilitate exchange of knowledge and best practice related to urban regeneration and to provide new ideas for this unique city based on our experience in Germany” Wiechmann, who teaches in TUD’s department of spatial planning and planning theory.
