City Approves Phase II Cleanup of Sherman Property
OUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The city Board of Control Thursday approved a contract not to exceed $229,000 for Brownfield Restoration Group to begin Phase II environmental testing on the former Youngstown Sheet & Tube property off Wilson Avenue.
Chuck Shasho, deputy director of public works, added the item at the meeting and said the measure calls for Brownfield Restoration to take soil samples and place monitoring wells to assess the level of contamination at the 71-acre site.
Pittsburgh-based Sherman International purchased the vacant land about eight years ago as well as an adjoining 38-acre parcel in Campbell that runs along the Mahoning River.
T. Sharon Woodberry, city economic development director, said that Sherman wants to place a steel processing business at the site, but cautions there "are no firm commitments" to any project.
The board also approved a change order for the Phase II rail moderation project related to V&M Star's new tube processing mill. The change order reduces the cost by 232,548.87 to $14,377,655.29.
And, the board approved a develop agreement between the city and Taylor-Winfield Technologies Inc. Taylor-Winfield, part of the Brilex Group, wants to construct a $2 million addition to its building at 3200 Innovation Place and relocate 37 employees to the site.
