Breaking News: Commission OKs Racino License Transfer
COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State Racing Commission this morning approved the transfer of a thoroughbred license from Penn National Gaming Inc.'s Beulah Park track outside Columbus to the site of the proposed Hollywood Slots at Mahoning Valley Race Course in Austintown.
The commission, which met this morning, agreed a week ago to take Penn National's latest plan for the track under advisement in advance of today's meeting in Columbus. The plan proposed by Penn National last week called for about 1,000 enclosed trackview seats to be built in two phases at the Austintown site, as demand permits, and a possible third phase as well.
Penn National, which began work last year on the Austintown site, halted work on the $125 million racino about a month ago when the racing commission balked at approving the license transfer over concerns about inadequate seating and stall space. Penn National had targeted a second-quarter 2014 opening for the track.
