Shell, Chesapeake Secure More Well Drilling Permits
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Shell Western E&P Inc., or SWEPI, a division of Royal Dutch Shell, has secured a new permit to drill in Lawrence County, Pa., according to records from the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection.
SWEPI received a permit April 12 to drill a vertical well for unconventional gas exploration at the Twentier property in Perry Township, public records show. Often a vertical permit is followed by a horizontal permit to tap into unconventional shale formations such as the Utica.
Pennsylvania DEP records contain no new permits issued last week for Mercer County.
In Ohio, Oklahoma City-based Chesapeake Energy Corp. continues to aggressively pursue new oil and gas exploration in the "wet" gas region of the Utica shale, according to data from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources.
ODNR signed off on nine new horizontal permits for Chesapeake Exploration LLC for the week ending April 13, all in Carroll County. Chesapeake, the most prolific driller in the Utica, was awarded horizontal permits in Union, Loudon, Lee, Augusta and Perry townships, records show.
Gulfport Energy Corp., also based in Oklahoma City, secured three new permits for wells in Harrison County, all at the Darla site in Athens Township.
A single permit was also issued last week to CNX Gas Co. LLC, a division of Consol Energy, to drill in Enoch Township of Noble County.
No new permits were issued for Mahoning, Trumbull or Columbiana counties during the week, according to ODNR.
As of April 13, 605 horizontal permits have been issued in the Utica, 297 of these wells are drilled, and 89 wells are in production, ODNR reports.
