Savage Services Opens at Ohio Commerce Center
LORDSTOWN, Ohio -- Savage Services will service companies in the Utica shale play from its new operation at Ohio Commerce Park. The materials handling and management company, based in Salt Lake City, will immediately commence transloading bulk materials to and from railcars, manage materials flow, and manage safe rail operations.
Savage Services describes itself as "an innovative supply chain solutions company." The company operates 170 locations and employs more than 2,700. "Savage supports all three operational components of the oil and gas industry -- upstream, midstream and downstream," states its website. Its customers also include companies engaged in mining and manufacturing, refining, elecric power generation and agriculture.
The news comes ahead of other announcements expected in the weeks ahead regarding more investment and jobs coming to the Ohio Commerce Center, say officials with Routh Hurlbert Real Estate, Warren, which is marketing the property.
Site upgrades have been made to the 516-acres business park using a $2 million Ohio Job Ready Sites grant secured with the assistance of the Youngstown/Warren Regional Chamber along with private funds. Routh Hurlbert credited the Ohio JRS investment with attracting Savage and its future jobs, as well as getting the attention of many other companies in and out of the oil and gas sector.
Savage’s arrival complements the ongoing installation of the Utica Shale play’s first rail loop track. The 12,000-foot-long rail road track will allow for high-speed efficient transloading of materials for the shale play, and is part of the more than 10 miles of track in place on site to service rail related businesses. The completed loop track will be available for unit train use by late summer 2013, and portions are in use today, Routh Hurlbert officials said. This benefits the railroads, the oil companies, and local land owners by increasing the efficiency and lowering the cost of getting products to and from markets, they add.
Initially frac sand will be off loaded from rail cars, but soon oil will be loaded from wells on to rail cars bound for refineries, The loop track will allow for unit trains, at 60-110 cars the longest trains used by rail roads, to be loaded and unloaded without uncoupling or fouling the main line.
