New Utica Well Permits for Columbiana County
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- The Ohio Department of Natural Resources issued three new permits last week to Chesapeake Energy Corp. to drill horizontal wells that target the Utica shale formation in Columbiana County, records show.
Two of those wells are planned for Franklin Township at the Pitts farm, ODNR data say. The other well is slated for Hanover Township at the Altenhof property.
Seventy-two permits for horizontal wells have been issued for sites in Columbiana County since June 2011 when interest in the Utica shale started to climb. All but two of these permits are held by Chesapeake. Hilcorp Energy Co. and SWEPI L.P., a subsidiary of Royal Dutch Shell, hold the others.
Of the 72 permitted sites in Columbiana County, 37 wells have been drilled and six are listed as producing, according to ODNR records.
No new permits were filed flast week or Mahoning or Trumbull counties during the week.
Chesapeake also secured four permits to drill new wells in Carroll County, where the company holds the most leasehold acreage. Chesapeake obtained permits to drill two wells at the JC Acres Farm in Loudon Township, one at the Buck farm in East Township, and another on the Brown property in Lee Township.
ODNR also issued permits to Antero Resources for three wells in Seneca Township in Noble County at the Vorhies farm, records show.
In western Pennsylvania, the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection issued a single horizontal permit to RE Gas Development, a subsidiary of Rex Energy, to drill a Utica well in Perry Township in Lawrence County.
There were no new permits issued for Mercer County, Pa., during the week, according to DEP records.
