Halcon Gets Permit for New Well in Jackson Township
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- The Ohio Department of Natural Resources issued just one permit for a horizontal well last week for exploration in the Utica shale in eastern Ohio -- and it's for a property in Mahoning County.
Halcon Operating Co. Inc. was awarded a permit Oct. 4 to drill a new horizontal well in Jackson Township on the Grenamyer farm, according to ODNR data.
It is the second such permit that Halcon has obtained for a site in Mahoning County. An earlier well was drilled in Jackson Township on the Davidson property, records show.
Halcon also has five wells permitted in Trumbull County, including a second permit issued two weeks ago slated for the Kibler farm in Lordstown.
No other well permits were issued across the entire shale play for the week ending Oct. 5, ODNR reported.
To date, there are 914 horizontal well permits for sites across the Utica shale, a rock formation 7,000 feet below eastern Ohio that contains a sizeable deposit of natural gas and natural-gas liquids.
Of these permitted wells, 565 have been drilled and 164 are producing. Most of the wells permitted, drilled or in production, are in Carroll County where Chesapeake Exploration LLC is the most active driller.
Meanwhile, the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection issued five new horizontal permits to Hilcorp Energy Co. to explore the Utica in Mercer County, the agency reports.
The Pennsylvania DEP awarded four permits Oct. 1 to Hilcorp for new wells on the Radkowsky farm in Shenango Township, data show. Another horizontal permit was issued to the company for the McGhee property in Jefferson Township.
No new permits were issued for Lawrence County, according to the DEP.
