Chevron Issued Permit to Drill in Mercer County, Pa.
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection has awarded Chevron Appalachia LLC a new permit to explore for oil and gas in the Utica shale, the first for the energy giant in Mercer County.
Pennsylvania DEP records show that Chevron was awarded a horizontal permit Oct. 3 to develop a horizontal well in East Lackawannock Township at the Hurtt farm.
Since May, three other permits have been issued for unconventional drill permits in Mercer County. Carrizo Oil and Gas was awarded three permits for horizontal wells in West Salem Township at the Yoder, Phillips and Miklos farms.
There were no new wells permitted in Lawrence County over the last 20 days. In August, Rex Energy was awarded a permit to drill a horizontal well at the Hufnagel property, while Shell Oil and Hillcorp Energy hold permits to drill at locations in Pulaski, Scott and North Beaver townships.
Since March, 22 new horizontal well permits have been issued to energy companies exploring the Utica in Lawrence County. Hilcorp Energy and SWEPI, a Shell subsidiary, are among the most active drillers in Lawrence County.
Also on Oct. 3, the DEP issued a horizontal permit to Chesapeake Appalachia LLC, a subsidiary of Chesapeake Energy Corp., giving it the green light to explore the Utica shale in Beaver County.
Chesapeake was permitted to drill a horizontal well in Shippingport at the Davie Bea farm, records show.
