Chesapeake, Gulfport, Hilcorp Issued More Permits
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Oklahoma City-based Chesapeake Energy Corp. continues its aggressive permitting strategy in the Utica shale in eastern Ohio, particularly in Carroll County, state records show.
The Ohio Department of Natural Resources issued eight new permits for Chesapeake Exploration LLC for horizontal wells in that county during the week of Nov. 25.
Chesapeake was granted permits to drill six horizontal wells on the Palmer property in Loudon Township. The company was also awarded another drilling permit for the Burgett farm in Center Township and one more for the Fligiel property in Perry Township.
The energy company holds 161 horizontal drilling permits in Carroll County alone. Chesapeake also has 59 permits to drill in neighboring Columbiana County.
And, Okalahoma City-based Gulfport Energy Corp. was issued a permit to drill on the Stout property in Moorfield Township in Harrison County.
Gulfport has struck it rich in this part of the state with the most productive wells in the Utica. Last week, the company reported that its Shugert 1-12H well in Belmont County tested at a peak production rate of 28.5 million cubic feet of natural gas per day, exceeding the other best wells in the Utica.
That well also tested at 7,482 barrels of oil equivalent per day, by far the best well in Ohio.
No new permits were issued during the week for drill sites in Columbiana, Mahoning or Trumbull counties.
In western Pennsylvania, Hilcorp Energy continues to increase its permitting activity.
The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection has awarded Hilcorp a permit to drill a horizontal well in Lawrence County, records show.
Hilcorp received the permit Nov. 29, allowing the company the rights to drill a horizontal well on the McConahy property in Pulaski Township.
The DEP did not issue any permits to drill in nearby Mercer County during the week.
