BP Seeks Permits to Plug Trumbull Utica Wells
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- BP America, which announced in April it would pull up stakes in the Utica and place its leasehold acres up for sale in Trumbull and Mahoning counties (READ STORY), received a permit last week to plug and abandon its Jewett 1H well in Johnston Township in Trumbull County, according to data from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources.
BP's operating partner in the venture, Brammer Engineering, is also seeking permits to plug and abandon its Dunbar well in Vernon Township and its Roscoe well in Gustavus Township, both in Trumbull County, according to ODNR.
There were no new horizontal well permits issued for Columbiana, Trumbull or Mahoning counties during the week, according to ODNR.
Instead, energy producers exploring Ohio's Utica shale continue to focus their efforts in the southeastern corner of the state, according to the latest permits issued by ODNR.
ODNR issued 13 new horizontal permits for the week ended July 12.
Four permits were awarded to Eclipse Resources 1 LP for the company's Weekender well pad in Guernsey County, while four new permits were also issued to Chesapeake Energy for three wells in Jefferson County and one in Harrison County, ODNR records show.
XTO Energy, a subsidiary of Exxon Mobile Corp., received three new horizontal permits to drill wells in Belmont County, while HG Energy was issued a single permit for a new well in Monroe County.
ODNR reports that 953 horizontal wells have been drilled in the Utica as of July 12 and 476 are designated as in production. Since 2010, 1,397 permits for horizontal wells have been issued throughout the Utica.
Also, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection, there were no new horizontal well permits issued for either Lawrence or Mercer counties.
