The Daily Grind: Who Needs Coffee Most?
CHICAGO – Saturday is National Coffee Day and to observe the date, CareerBuilder and Dunkin’ Donuts conducted a survey, “Coffee: Who Needs It most?”
Food preparation and service workers top the list, the survey found.
Then come scientists, sales representatives, marketing/public relations professionals, nurses (including nurse practitioners and physician assistants), editors/writers and others who work in the media, business executives, K-12 teachers and instructors, engineering technicians and support staff and information technology managers and network administrators.
Coffee plays a major role in helping professionals stay alert at work, the respondents said. Forty-three percent of those who drink coffee claim they are less productive without a cup, the survey found.
The survey also shows other ways that coffee fits into people's "daily grind" in the workplace. For example:
- 63% of workers who drink coffee consume two cups or more each workday, and 28% drink three or more cups.
- The majority of younger workers need coffee for energy and motivation, 62% of workers ages 18 to 24 saying they are less productive without coffee. Fifty-eight percent of workers ages 25 to 34 make the same claim.
- 55% of workers say they drink at least one cup each workday. By geography, 64% of those in the Northeast do so compared to 54% in the South and 51% in the Midwest and West.
- 47% of female workers and 40% of male workers claim they are less productive without coffee.
"There's a reason why coffee is a staple in the workplace," said Cynthia McIntyre, vice president of marketing and communications at CareerBuilder. "Workers report that coffee fuels higher energy and productivity and serves as a means to socialize with colleagues."
CareerBuilder's online site, CareerBuilder.com, is the largest in the United States. It claims more than 24 million unique visitors, to have helped one million seekers find jobs and to have 49 million resumes.
