United Way Chapter Opens Applications for Funding
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- The United Way of Youngstown and the Mahoning Valley will open its funding process to any nonprofit organization delivering health and human services in Mahoning County and in Girard, Liberty and Hubbard in Trumbull County, the nonprofit agency announced.
Grant applications on the required form must be submitted and received by Feb. 14, 2014. This year, members of the United Way executive committee approved funding of more than $1.9 million to programs and to United Way-led initiatives. Currently 34 partner agencies receive funding to provide over 70 health and human service programs and initiatives.
“Following the lead of United Way Worldwide, working with our community partners on focused IMPACT areas will continue to create powerful collaborations to address our Valley’s specific issues while providing comprehensive services and measureable results for those in need,” said Bob Hannon, President of United Way of Youngstown and the Mahoning Valley. “We look forward to receiving program proposals that establish strategies that meet the needs of our community in the areas of education, income, health and community support services.”
In addition to its funded partner agencies, the United Way of Youngstown and the Mahoning Valley provides direct initiatives. These include Success by 6, which seeks to make sure children under the age of 6 are prepared to enter kindergarten,and Success After 6, an after-school intervention program. Initiatives that support the general well being of the Mahoning Valley include programs to support those in need of disaster or emergency services, shelter/domestic violence, food, housing and social services.
Nonprofit organizations that wish to apply for funding through United Way should visit the United Way website for planning documents that outline the focus areas and strategies. Agencies interested in applying must submit a grant application that can be found on the United Way homepage. Organizations must meet the following eligibility guidelines and have available for review:
- By-laws
- Affirmative action policy/non-discrimination policies
- Directors and officers Insurance
- Liability insurance
- Board-approved fiscal policies and procedures
- Board-approved personnel policies and procedures handbook
- Articles of incorporation
In addition, organizations must be able to document that the agency:
- Is governed by a voluntary board of directors consisting of members from the general community.
- Has at least one full-time exempt staff person.
- Has been in business for at least two years.
- Is committing some of its own resources to the program.
- Has an outcome measurement system.
- Will conduct a workplace campaign to benefit United Way of Youngstown and the Mahoning Valley.
Grant applications on the required form must be submitted to the Community IMPACT Committee at the United Way office, 255 Watt St., Youngstown, OH 44505-3010 or by electronic submission.
