United Van Lines Names Carney-McNicholas No. 1
YOUNGSTOWN, OHIO -- For the first time since it affiliated with United Van Lines, Carney-McNicholas Inc., which has sites in Austintown and Lorain, has won the moving line’s highest honor -- the President's Quality Award.
Based on 10 metrics taken from customer response surveys, the award – and a cash prize -- is given to the highest-rated company. Often, mere fractions of a point separate the winners of first and second places.
“In this case, we had an extremely strong year with our quality numbers. While I haven't seen the data, the president of our van line said we stuck out pretty high,” says owner Thomas J. (TJ) Carney. “One of the scores, the willingness to recommend, was one point ahead of second place. That's just not common.”
This is the first time Carney-McNicholas has won the president’s award, besting more than 500 moving companies across the country. The company, founded in 1906 by J.V. McNicholas, has won other awards from United Van Lines, based on five metrics, 10 times over the last two decades. It had also received a cash prize.
“It's revenue for the company. We distribute it as performance bonuses to everyone involved with us at Carney-McNicholas,” Carney says. “Youngstown has always been a place where quality has been the core value of our community. As a company that provides a needed service, we believe that pride in high-quality service to our customers is a value of our family and our community,” he remarks.
United CEO Rich McClure acknowledged those values when he presented the award Oct. 20 in Colorado Springs, Colo.
“Carney-McNicholas is an agency that thrives on core family values. With the fifth generation at the helm, their mission is to continue the legacy of the family business by meeting and exceeding customers' expectations,” McClure said.
After years of being recognized for service to its customers, but not acknowledged as the best in the nation, Carney says it feels good to be on top.
“Well first, we brag about it to everyone. We are very pleased to have been recognized by our van line for continuous quality work. For us, it's really big deal,” he comments. “We're the No. 1 agent for the No. 1 van line.”
