New Castle Electric Plant to Be Converted to Gas
HARRISBURG, Pa. -- Monday's announcement by NRG Energy that the company will convert its electric generation plant in New Castle to operate on natural gas is good news to Gov. Tom Corbett, his office said. The conversion will help retain 40 jobs and help create 50 to 100 temporary construction jobs.
The former owner, Gen-On Energy Inc., announced last year that it would close the 330-megawatt plant in April 2015 because of costly federal environmental control requirements.
"I am appreciative of NRG Energy's CEO David Crane and his team for their commitment to Pennsylvania families and workers," Corbett said in a prepared statement. "This announcement demonstrates the positive impact safe and responsible natural gas development is having on Pennsylvania's economy."
NRG originally said it would deactivate the three coal units at the New Castle plant as well as a 732-megawatt plant in Avon Lake, Ohio. But since its merger with GenOn Energy last December, NRG has begun looking at all of its coal plants to see if they can be converted or repowered economically. Conversion of both the New Castle and Avon Lake plants is slated for completion in May 2016.
