Mountaineer Casino Begins Renovation of Hotel Rooms
NEWELL, W. Va. -- Considering the economic and competitive influences, Mountaineer Casino Racetrack & Resort has remained competitive in the Ohio, Pennsylvania and West Virginia gaming markets with continuous improvements on the casino floor, in the restaurants, targeted marketing efforts and ongoing plans for future upgrades, reports Chris Kern, general manager.
Beginning this month, all 359 hotel rooms will be completely renovated with new furniture, carpeting and wall treatments, Kern notes.
Economic conditions in the area have been less than favorable for the past few years -- Mountaineer's net revenues decreased 10.4% in the third quarter of last year -- but the addition of shale drilling and related industries has provided optimism for the region, Kern says.
Mountainee continues to "reinvent" itself amid the challenges from more and more casinos opening in the gaming market, he continues.
"The upgrades, from subtle to major, are all made to create a better gaming and entertainment experience for our guests," Kern explains. "Renovations at Mountaineer are ongoing; there is no end date to the many upgrades we continue to make."
The latest upgrades include a new Center Bar and Big Al's deli. The Center Bar was removed and completely rebuilt on the gaming floor in a sleek, modern style, providing seating for 30 around a granite bar top with 22 recessed slot machines available for play. "It is the focal point for slot and table game players in the center of the gaming floor and offers eight big screen televisions for news and sporting events." Kern says.
The new Big Al's deli, located adjacent to the gaming floor next to the Riverfront Buffet, is the result of combining two Casino Player magazine award-winning restaurants and an ice cream shop, he notes. The Java Joint was named the No. 1 best coffee shop and Big Al's was named the No. 1 best pizza in a racino in the magazine's "Best of Dining and Nightlife Awards."
