Los Gallos Closes Its Downtown Restaurant
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- The sign says “Now Open” but look in the windows of Los Gallos Mexican restaurant downtown and you see three pans of sauces sitting on a counter but no stove or other appliances --- and no tables for the rows of booth seats that remain in place.
The Mexican restaurant, which opened last November, closed this week without public notice. An employee who answered the phone Wednesday at the Boardman Los Gallos confirmed the downtown restaurant is closed. “We’re in the process,” he said.
No further information was available and a spokesman for the chain’s owner, Israel Zambrano, did not respond for requests for comment.
Los Gallos operated in the corner of the southwest corner of Eastern Gateway Community College’s Valley Center at 101 E. Federal St. The restaurant area had been occupied by Café Cimmento, which closed when its chef moved out of the area.
The building, formerly known as Plaza Place, was purchased in April by Higher Education Partners, a Rhode Island company that signed a 20-year agreement with the college to renovate and manage its portion of the building.
At the time of the sale, USA Plaza Parking LLC, an entity of the Frangos Group, said it would continue to operate and manage the building’s parking garage and it lease with Los Gallos.
Calls to USA Plaza Parking had not been returned as of this posting.
In addition to its Boardman restaurant, Los Gallos operates sites in North Lima and Austintown. Its restaurant in Struthers closed last year “for extensive remodeling,” the company said. It has not reopened.
According to the Los Gallos website, the company’s restaurant in Howland recently was sold.
