Landfill Workers, Garbage Haulers Return to Work
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The strike by members of Teamsters Local 377 against Allied Waste/Republic Services ended Sunday, reports Doug Dunn, general manager of the company’s Youngstown division.
"We are pleased to announce that all of our employees will return to work this evening,” Dunn said in a statement released Sunday afternoon. “We appreciate the patience our customers demonstrated during the past week. Crews will work throughout the week to service all of our customers' waste and recycling needs."
Teamsters walked off the job March 28 at the company’s Carbon Limestone Landfill in Poland Township. Garbage truck drivers refused to cross the picket line and instead staged “ a sympathy strike” that lasted a few days. Then, a few days after drivers resumed garbage pick-up, they staged another strike.
Contract talks are scheduled to take place Tuesday and Wednesday.
Last week the company filed a federal lawsuit against the Teamsters that claimed the union was violating labor law.
