Grant Funds Second Harvest Mobile Food Pantry
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Second Harvest Food Bank will bring food to residents in Columbiana County thanks to a $17,000 Community Improvement Grant provided by the State Appalachian Development Program.
“The Second Harvest Food Bank has done a great job in running a very efficient operation and getting food out to those who are in need,” said Jason Wilson, director of the Governor’s Office of Appalachia, in presenting the grant. “We were able to bring this grant money here to help them purchase a truck and much of the equipment needed to get the food to those who need it.”
The truck and equipment will be used for the mobile pantry program that will deliver truckloads of food to residents in Hanover and Franklin Township in Columbiana County.
“We’ve proven that we have the efficiency and the network to be able to distribute food to people in the Columbiana County area that are in need,” says the executive director of Second Harvest Food Bank, Michael Iberis. “We’re going to make sure that they get food once a month to supplement their normal food allocation. Hopefully they won’t have to choose between rent, utilities, or food.”
The mobile pantry will begin operations Sept. 13 at Fellowship of the Beloved in Hanoverton from 10 a.m. – 12 p.m., and will continue to distribute food on the second Thursday of each month.
Second Harvest Food Bank distributed more than 9 million pounds of food in the tri-county area in 2011. The first six months of this year saw an 18% increase in the number of people served compared to the same time period last year.
The Governor’s Office of Appalachia works to promote the region’s assets and support local, regional, state, and federal initiatives in Ohio’s 32 Appalachian counties.
“Our goal is to help Ohioans improve their life,” says Wilson. “Whether that’s water lines, sewer lines, or small business, anyway we can help Ohioans improve their lives and be the best they can be, we want to support those projects.
