GM Sales Up 5% in December, 3.7% in 2012
DETROIT – General Motors Co. this morning reported that sales of new cars and trucks increased 5% in December compared to the same period last year, and ended 2012 with a 3.7% gain.
GM said that it recorded its highest December sales in five years with 245,733 new vehicles.
The automaker said total sales for 2012 stood at 2,595,717 compared 2,503,820 sold in 2011.
Among the top-sellers in GM's portfolio during the month was the Lordstown, Ohio-produced Chevrolet Cruze. Cruze sales soared 27.3% compared to the same period last year with 21,230 sold.
Cruze sales totaled 237,758 in 2012, a 2.6% increase compared to 2011, GM said.
"GM's strong finish in 2012, the industry's momentum and the overall health of the U.S. economy make us optimistic about 2013," said Kurt McNeil, vice president of U.S. sales operations. "The budget compromise reached in Washington this week removes uncertainty and clears the way for full-year light vehicle sales to rise to the 15 million to 15.5 million unit range in 2013."
GM estimated the seasonally adjusted annual sales rate for the industry registered about 15.6 million units in December, while the estimate for total vehicles sold in 2012 should come in at the 14.5 million range.
