GM Sales Up 3% Last Month; Chevy Cruze Sales Up 27%
DETROIT – General Motors Co. reported sales rose 3% in November compared to the same period last year, while Chrysler Group LLC said its numbers climbed 14%.
The two automakers turned in their best November sales since 2007, much of it because of replacement buying as a result of Hurricane Sandy's destructive path along the East Coast in late October.
And, Ford Motor Co., Toyota Motor Corp. and Honda Motor Corp. also posted higher sales for the month.
GM reported it sold 186,505 new cars and trucks in November, highlighted by sales of the Chevrolet Silverado pickup and Chevrolet Equinox.
The Chevrolet Cruze, produced at GM's Lordstown Complex, posted a 27% increase in sales compared to the same month the previous year, the company reported.
Cruze sales totaled 16,807 units, an improvement over the 13,328 sold in November 2011. The Lordstown plant reported it manufactured 22,329 Cruzes, according to production data from GM.
"In November, we saw strong car and crossover sales, and we continue to make inroads with younger customers, import drivers and buyers focused on fuel economy," Kurt McNeil, GM vice president of U.S. sales operations, said in a statement.
Chrysler's increase was fueled by Ram pickup sales that soared 23% during the month, the company noted, while its Fiat brand increased 123%
The Auburn Hills, Mich., automaker reported sales of 122,565 vehicles during the month.
Ford reported that its business increased 6.5% on sales of 177,673 new cars and trucks, mainly its F-series pickups.
Japanese automakers Toyota and Honda also reported double-digit sales increases.
Honda turned in its best sales ever for November on 116,580 new cars and trucks, a 39% improvement over November 2011. Toyota said its sales jumped 17.2% on 161,695 new vehicles sold.
