GM Lordstown Workers Have Good Cause to Eat (For)
LORDSTOWN, Ohio – General Motors Co.'s Lordstown East Plant saw its share of warm hearts and warm stomachs Thursday as employees there purchased chicken lunches to raise money for the March of Dimes.
GM spokesman Tom Mock said the March of Dimes and the United Way are two of the major charities for which the plant raises money every year. "We do a lot," he said, emphasizing the collaboration between the plant and its two unions, locals 1112 and 1714 of the United Auto Workers.
Last year, the plant raised $68,500 for the March of Dimes through various campaigns. "It was by far the largest single workforce campaign in the country," Mock said.
A total of 1,200 lunches and dinners provided by the Buena Vista Cafe were to be distributed in the plant, and each employee pays $10, Mock said. Most of the proceeds go to the United Way.
Workers and managers at the Lordstown West Plant purchased meals last week.
Karen Eusanio, chairwoman of the community services committee of Local 1112, said that the dinners should raise about $6,000 today. "We're doing several fundraisers and we're hoping to pass our goal," she said.
The March of Dimes effort is just one aspect of the plant's commitment to community service, she added.
"We do lots of different things," Eusanio said. "One of them that we started here, called Care and Share, is one we're really proud of, where we feed over 350 families at Christmastime."
