GM Introduces Canyon Midsize Truck at Auto Show
DETROIT -- General Motors Co. unveiled its all-new 2015 GMC Canyon midsize truck Sunday evening during a press event to kick off the automaker’s participation in the North American International Auto Show.
When it goes on sale this year, the Canyon will give GMC the only three-truck lineup in the industry, GM said. As described by the automaker, the new midsize truck "is expected to deliver class-leading capabilities in an efficiently sized, maneuverable package for customers who want the cargo-hauling and trailering versatility of a truck without the size of a full-size pickup.”
Mary Barra, the new CEO of GM, took the stage at the unveiling to say the GMC Canyon illustrates the automaker’s goal “to make sure every vehicle is the best in segment in every country in which we complete.
“Here in North America,” she said, “the new GMC Canyon is part of our three-truck strategy designed with the customer in mind, making us the only manufacturer that lets buyers choose precisely the right truck for their needs: light duty, heavy duty or midsize. The midsize truck segment is especially interesting. Other manufacturers have either ignored it or abandoned it,” Barra continued. “That means midsize pickup customers have had to compromise. To get the features, content and amenities they're looking for, they've had to either leave the segment -- most often to a compact crossover or car -- or choose from a limited selection. “To us, that's no way to treat a customer. That's opportunity knocking.”
Said Tony DiSalle, vice president of GMC marketing, in a statement distributed before the press event, “The Canyon completes GMC’s three-truck family, which started with the redesigned 2014 Sierra 1500 and 2015 Sierra HD. It rounds out a lineup that offers the broadest range of capabilities in the industry, giving truck customers more choices to find the vehicle that meets their professional, personal and lifestyle needs.”
Canyon is offered in base, SLE and SLT models, in 2WD and 4WD models, and with an All-Terrain package offered on SLE models.
