DRS Upgrades Its Cloud Infrastructure
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- DRS LLC reports it has invested more than $2 million to upgrade and expand its cloud service offerings for clients. The upgrades included investments in the company’s fiber infrastructure, data centers, and personnel.
DRS added a 10-gigabyte fiber optic network connection between its technology complex on Belmont Avenue and its data center on the south side of Youngstown, said Todd Miller, director of operations. This network provides a greater bandwidth capacity for DRS’ customers, resulting in increased speed and volume for clients and improving their productivity. In addition, DRS has added a 1-gigabyte connection to its facility in Westerville.
To complement the increased bandwidth, DRS also added 100 terabytes of cloud storage, Miller noted. The combination of bandwidth and storage allows DRS to make the cloud available to small and medium-sized businesses in the region.
Miller compared the additional amount of storage to an iPod or iPad. “If your iPod or iPad holds 16 gigabytes of storage, our increase in storage is equivalent to more than 6,000 iPods or iPads,” he explained. “This was necessary not only because of the rate of addition of new clients, but also the growth in data and storage needs from existing ones.”
The company also added two 20-ton computer room air conditioners to properly maintain the environment with the new expansions. DRS’ data centers now have more than 240 tons of cooling which allows for continued growth into the future. “As we expand with customers, we continue to increase the cooling requirements within the data center to allow for proper configurations,” Miller said.
DRS recently broke ground on fiber expansion projects in Hermitage and Sharon, Pa., and in Youngstown at a project cost of just over $1 million. To support the growth in client base and infrastructure, the company also has added 18 employees over the last year, mainly in the mid- to high-end technical engineering field who have certifications in Microsoft, Cisco and EMC environments.
