Dollar General to Open Austintown Store Saturday
AUSTINTOWN, Ohio – Dollar General Corp., embroiled in a bidding war for rival Family Dollar Stores Inc., will open a new store Saturday at 2002 S. Raccoon Road.
On Tuesday, Dollar General increased its bid for Family Dollar to $9.1 billion and said it would pay a break-up fee of $500 million if concerns over competition blocked the deal, and said it would sell up to 1,500 stores if necessary. It also warned it may appeal directly to shareholders if its bid was rejected.
Family Dollar rejected an earlier $8.95 million bid by Dollar General in favor of a cash-and-stock bid from Dollar Tree Inc worth $8.5 million.
The Goodlettsville, Tenn.-based deep-discount retailer will celebrate the grand opening of the store here with special deals and prizes for customers. Giveaways will include $10 Dollar General gift cards for the first 50 adult shoppers and tote bags for the first 200 shoppers.
Features of the new store include seasonal products stationed in the center of the store, easily recognizable departments with visible signage and coolers that are more conveniently located at the front of the store.
“Dollar General is committed to delivering a pleasant shopping experience that includes a convenient location, a wide assortment of merchandise and great prices on quality products,” said Dan Nieser, Dollar General’s senior vice president of real estate and store development. “We hope our Youngstown customers will continue to enjoy shopping at Dollar General’s new location.”
Dollar General operates 11,000 stores in 40 states.
