Cruze Sales Up 21% as Domestic Industry Gains
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Sales of the Lordstown-built Chevrolet Cruze rose 21% during April compared to the same period a year earlier, driving General Motors Co. to an 11% gain for the month, the company reported Wednesday.
GM reported it sold 237,646 new vehicles during the month. Cruze sales stood at 22,032, making it the second-best selling new vehicle in GM's lineup, second to the Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck, which posted 39,395 deliveries in April.
"Car-buying conditions are strong and will continue to release pent-up demand," said Kurt McNeil, GM vice president of U.S. sales operations. "We're very optimistic because GM's market share is growing, the economy continues to move forward and important car and truck launches are just getting underway."
The industry's annual selling rate for the month was estimated in the 15 million range.
Ford Motor Co., and Chrysler Group LLC also saw business gains during the month, the automakers reported.
Ford reported it sold 212,584 new vehicles during the month, an 18% increase compared to April 2012, the company said. The Ford Fusion saw its best April ever with 26,722 vehicles, a 24% increase.
And, Chrysler said its sales jumped 11% in April on sales of 156,698 cars and trucks, rounding out a strong sales month in which domestic automakers collectively saw an increase in market share for the first time since 1993.
Japanese automaker Toyota Motor Co. reported that it sold 176,160 new cars and trucks, slipping 1.1%, while Honda Motor Co.'s sales increased by 7.4% the company said, on sales of 130,999 new vehicles.
