Cruze Rides to Best February Sales Ever
DETROIT -- Sales of the Chevrolet Cruze rose 21.7% during February compared to the same month in 2013, while overall sales of General Motors Co. vehicles slid 1% during the month, the company reported Monday.
Deliveries of the Cruze, the popular small car produced at GM's Lordstown Complex, reached 21,836 units during the month -- a record for sales of that car in February -- compared to 17,947 units sold in 2013, GM said. Cruze sales were the second-highest among GM's vehicle portfolio, behind the Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck, which saw 36,584 deliveries last month.
Cruze sales are up 19% through the first two months of 2014 compared to the same period last year.
GM delivered 222,104 vehicles during the month, down 1% from February 2013.
"Weather continued to impact the industry in February, but GM sales started to thaw during the Winter Olympic Games as our brand and marketing messages took hold," said Kurt McNeil, U.S. vice president of sales operations. "Car and crossover sales were particularly strong at Buick and Chevrolet, and we continue to have a strong mix of pickup sales"
Retail deliveries of Chevrolet and GMC large SUVs were up 14%, while crossover sales were up 4%, the company reported. Sales of the Cadillac SRX were up 23% while GMC Acadia sales rose 2%, GM said.
