Construction Contracts Awarded for Canfield Library
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- The board of trustees of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County selected Hudson Construction Inc. of Hermitage, Pa., as general contractor for the new Canfield Branch Library at its meeting Thursday.
Hudson submitted a bid of $3.1 million for the new library. It will be built on the site of the current building, which will close at the end of business Sept. 20 so that the building can be emptied in preparation for construction.
Hudson bid was among construction contracts totaling $4.08 million awarded yesterday. Other contracts awarded were for plumbing -- Morrone Mechanical of Lowellville, $129,000; mechanical -- York Mahoning MC Inc., $186,300; fire protection, RNL Fire Systems, $61,599; and electrical, Tri-Area Electric, $573,668.
At 18,135 square feet, the new branch will be more than triple the size of the branch it will replace. The current branch was built in 1969. Ronald Cornell Faniro of Faniro Architects Inc., of Youngstown, is architect on the project.
Plans have been in the works for nearly a decade for the branch, which will be constructed without funding from bond issues or loans.
Construction is expected to take up to 18 months.
A temporary library location will be set up in the Mill Creek Farm, 7574 Columbiana-Canfield Road, Canfield, beginning Oct. 1. Mill Creek MetroParks is making the space available at no cost. The temporary site will be open Monday-Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
Library patrons can also use the Austintown Branch, 600 S. Raccoon Road, at 6.5 miles away, and the Boardman Branch, 7680 Glenwood Ave., which is about 5.5 miles away.
Also during Thursday’s meeting, trustees recognized the Edward W. Powers Charitable Fund for its $48,000 donation, which was used to create the Edward W. Powers Teen Program Fund in the Library Foundation.
Heidi Daniel, library executive director, reported this year’s summer reading program had an increase of 26% in youth registration and 5% in adult registration.
