Community Foundation Awards $136,000 in Grants
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The Community Foundation of the Mahoning Valley disbursed $136,000 in third-quarter grants to 18 nonprofit organizations in Mahoning and Trumbull counties, its executive director, Shari Harrell, announced today.
The funds were sent the 18 organizations in late September.
The largest grant, $10,000, went to the Upstream Plus program of D&E Counseling Center. Upstream Plus is a home-based training and mentoring service that helps parents nurture the literacy, social and emotional development of their children in kindergarten, first and second grades, says Greg Cvetkovic, D&E director.
The second-largest grant, $7,500, was awarded to the Campbell backpack program under the aegis of Second Harvest Food Bank enrolled in Campbell Elementary School with bags of nutritious food for a weekend, says Michael Iberis, director of the food bank.
The Kennedy Family Fund paid for the $10,000 and $7,500 grants.
Other major grants:
- $6,000 for the permanent supportive housing program of the YWCA of Warren.
- $6,000 for transportation to the adult day care center of the Antonine Sisters in North Jackson so they can continue to live in their homes or with their families.
- $5,000 to Project Kind of the Compass Family & Community Services.
- $3,000 for the Opera Western Reserve production of “Don Giovanni.”
- $2,500 to the Trumbull County Transitional Aged Youth Initiative of Homes for Kids of Ohio.
- $2,500 for the VIP Workplace program of the Help Hotline Crisis Center.
- $2,000 to the Casa Madre program of the Ursuline Sisters HIV/AIDS Ministry.
Other organizations that received grants were Akron Children’s Hospital, American Heart Association, Cardinal Mooney High School, Mahoning Valley Historical Society, The National Center for Defense Manufacturing and Machining, Pelotonia-Ohio State University, Sister Jerome’s Poor and Youngstown State University.
The Community Foundation, which holds more than $56 million in assets, distributed more than $1 million during its fiscal 2014.
